22nd Annual Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival
“Held over three weekends every October, the Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival held just off the Southern California coast is an annual mecca for contemporary jazz fanatics from all around the country. Fans travel, as the classic song goes, 26 miles across the sea to experience their favorite artists in a paradise-like setting that is worlds away, literally, from any other jazz festival. Every year, in addition to the usual chart-topping suspects that everybody already knows and new artists playing typically melodic, funky fare, festival producer Art Good throws a cool stylistic curveball into the mix that draws on his own personal eclectic taste.
In 2003, when longtime musical partners Tony Grace and Rob DeBoer__collectively known, when they’re doing their jazz things, as Four80East–took the stage in the vast casino ballroom, few people in the audience knew that this was their first live performance ever. Good loved the Canadian duo’s chilled-out studio dates Nocturnal (2001) and Round 3 (2002), and aware that Higher Octave Music had just reissued their hard-to-find indie 1998 debut (simply titled The Album), Good was willing to bet that the duo could recreate the magic in person.
